When was the last time you took your cat to the vet? Some pet owners tend to think indoor cats don’t require vet visits but the truth is, they need the same care as our outdoor furry friends.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), August 22nd is Take Your Cat to the Vet Day in the United States. Staying up-to-date on check-ups could save you money in the long run and may even save your cat’s life.

Over the past few years the AVMA has begun to institute national awareness days in order to protect the safety of your pet and Take Your Cat to the Vet Day is one of their newer days. New days are added each year and the list continues to expand to increase awareness.

Some of their more popular events are:

  • World Animal Day – October 4
  • Pet Diabetes Month – November
  • Walk Your Pet Month – January
  • National Puppy Day – March 23
  • National Pet Day – April 11
  • National Pet Week – First week of May

Even though this holiday isn’t one of the more recognized awareness days, it’s just as important as the rest.

Tips to Reduce your Cat’s Stress before the Vet

  1. Understand your Cat’s Behavior

Respect your cat’s need for acclimation time because new people and places might startle them. Remember to stay calm.

  1. Help your Cat be Comfortable in the Carrier

Place familiar soft bedding inside the carrier with treats and toys for your feline to play with. This will help them warm up to being on the move.

  1. Place Carrier in Familiar Spot

Allow your furry friend to voluntarily enter the carrier by placing it in a familiar location, such as the living room.

  1. Enjoy a Cat Friendly Place

Designate a soothing calming spot for you and your cat. This will acclimate them before visiting the vet.

  1. Reacclimate to Your Home

After you visit, make sure to reacclimate your cat your home by slowly reintroducing them. Allow them to stay in their carrier for a few minutes after arriving.

If you follow all these tips, your cat is sure to have a successful and safe trip to the vet on August 22nd!
